Maran District (2002-2007)
Remembering Maran
The Maran District was the first of the Northland micronations, and came into being from around mid-July 2002. Not so much a micronation as such, it was more along the lines of a microcouncil - a fictional territorial authority (or local council) located in New Zealand's Bay of Islands. It was centred around the town of Whangae (modern-day Alston), and had its own newspaper and radio and television stations, but by mid-2007 it had fallen into inactivity
Little of the Maran District was ever documented, but despite this it is remembered in Sirocco with fondness. In a way, the nation lives on in the modern-day Maran District, which itself is the local authority of Kingdom Bay in southern Cambria. It also lives on in the collective name for the District and its successors - the Maranite nations. |
The Maran District left a legacy in Cambria beyond just the Maran District Council. Matauri, Tuesday Heights, and parts of Belmont, Gate Park, Gardenia, and the North East Passage all took their names during Maran times.

Kingdom of the Peebles (2006-2007)
A SILLY COUNTRY
The Kingdom of the Peebles was a short-lived nation that existed alongside the Maran District between mid-2006 and mid-2007. Presided over by the school cat, King Mambo, and run by his two loyal right-hand men (of whom Daniel Anderson was the Grand High Peebles), the Kingdom of the Peebles was an extremely informal quasi-kingdom named from a corruption of the word "peoples". No records remain of the Kingdom, and the King's advisors have long since parted ways, but the brief monarchy lives on in the name of Cambria's Kingdom Bay.
The Kingdom of the Peebles was perhaps the least serious of all four of the Maranite nations. Aside from having a cat as the king, the Kingdom's other claims to fame were the reverence surrounding the humble potato, and the "School of Stupidology", an educational institute devoted to the ancient art of goofing around. Sirocco's tram culture originates from this era.
